The Cameron Parish School Board met in regular session on this date with the following members present: Clifton Morris - President, Loston McEvers, Dot Theriot, Dwayne Sanner, Pat Howerton, Marvin Trahan and Rachel Abadie. Absent: None.
On motion of Mr. Howerton, seconded by Mr. Trahan, the Board approved the agenda.
On motion of Mr. McEvers, seconded by Mr. Sanner, the Board approved the minutes from the February 9, 2004 regular meeting as printed.
On motion of Mr. Howerton, seconded by Mrs. Theriot, the Board recognized with appreciation, Cody Styron, graduate of Cameron Parish Schools, with military service in Iraq. Also, the Cameron Parish Police Jury presented a proclamation that declared March 12, 2004 as Cody Styron Day.
On motion of Mrs. Theriot, seconded by Mr. Sanner, the Board recognized Middle School Student of the Year, Ms. Kami Danille Savoie, 8th grader from South Cameron High School.
On motion of Mr. Trahan, seconded by Mr. Sanner, the Board received a report and request on a private road (not asphalt) that needs gravel work in order for a school bus to travel it to transport students in Johnson Bayou (Middle Ridge). The item will be referred to legal counsel and discussed again at the April, 2004 board meeting.
On motion of Mrs. Abadie, seconded by Mr. McEvers, the Board received a report on Professional Development activities planned for March 25-26, 2004.
On motion of Mr. Sanner, seconded by Mrs. Theriot, the Board received an update on Louisiana’s Statewide Testing scheduled for March 15-19, 2004.
On motion of Mrs. Theriot, seconded by Mr. Trahan, the Board acknowledged final payment to Bessette Development, Application #17, School District 5, Johnson Bayou High School, in the amount of $135,936.31 from School District 5 bond funds.
On motion of Mr. Howerton, seconded by Mrs. Theriot, the Board authorized advertisement for the collection of alligator eggs on Cameron Parish School Board land, with bids to be taken for the whole, for the East side, or for the West side of the Calcasieu River.
On motion of Mrs. Abadie, seconded by Mr. Sanner, the Board granted permission for:
First and second grade students from Cameron Elementary to travel to Moody Gardens, Galveston, Texas by charter bus on March 24, 2004, for the purpose of engaging in hands-on activities in the discovery museum, rain forest, and aquarium (students taught by Ms. Virginia Jones, Ms. Carolyn Rutherford, Ms. Kathy Rowland, and Ms. Amanda Trosclair).
Ms. Tina Savoie’s Environmental Science class from South Cameron High School to visit the Ocean Star Oil Rig and Museum in Galveston, Texas on April 20, 2004 for the purpose of attaining on-site knowledge of oil exploration and the relationship of exploration to wetlands and coastal preservation.
Middle and secondary students from Johnson Bayou, under the supervision of Ms. Juanita Sandifer, for field trips: a) theatre in Nederland, Texas on March 10; b) Lamar Institute of Technology in Beaumont, Texas on April 20; and c) Museum of the Gulf Coast and Veterans’ Museum in Port Arthur, Texas on April 27.
On motion of Mr. Howerton, seconded by Mrs. Abadie, the Board approved personnel items:
Annual Continued Employment as required by Act 745 of 1977
Granted the superintendent authorization to send letters of continued employment to appropriate personnel as required by Act 745 of 1977

On motion of Mr. Sanner, seconded by Mr. Howerton, the Board approved the recommendation of the Superintendent for Mr. Doug Welch, Principal at Johnson Bayou High School, to be appointed to the position of Supervisor of Maintenance, Trans-portation, and other duties, with a two year contract to begin approximately June 15, 2004. The vote is recorded as follows:

NAYS: Mrs. Theriot, Mr. McEvers, Mr. Trahan

On motion of Mr. Howerton, seconded by Mrs. Abadie, the Board received the Superintendent’s Report.
On motion of Mr. Howerton, seconded by Mrs. Theriot, the Board approved the financial report.
On motion of Mr. McEvers, seconded by Mr. Sanner, the Board approved payment of bills.
On motion of Mr. McEvers, seconded by Mrs. Abadie, the Board adjourned until
the next regular meeting on April 5, 2004.
