Cameron, Louisiana

The Cameron Parish School Board met in regular session on this date with the following members present:  -  Pat Howerton - President, Glenda Abshire, Clifton Morris, Marvin Trahan, Clarence Vidrine and Tony Johnson.  Absent: None.  Mrs. Abshire conducted the meeting until Mr. Howerton arrived a short time after the meeting began.

 

On motion of Mr. Morris, seconded by Mr. Trahan, the Board approved the amended agenda.

 

On motion of Mr. Trahan, seconded by Mr. Johnson, the Board approved minutes from the February 4, 2002 regular meeting and the February 18, 2002 special meeting.

 

On motion of Mr. Morris, seconded by Mr. Johnson, the Board approved advertising for an oil, gas, and mineral lease on Section 16-15-15, containing 640 acres, more or less, as nominated by Basin Properties, Inc. ( Resolution attached.)

 

The Board recognized the following students:

 

•     Class C Girls Champions - Hackberry High School Lady Mustangs

•     LSBA Art Contest participants

•     Jr. and Sr. 4-H Clubs

•     Beta and Student Councils

•     Jacob Trahan - Boy Scout

 

The Board recognized schools which received accountability rewards - Grand Lake, Hackberry, and South Cameron Elementary.

 

On motion of Mr. Johnson, seconded by Mr. Trahan, the Board approved summer maintenance work, with an amendment to handle storage facility needs separately and to hear a report regarding storage facility needs at a later date, and granted permission to bid or obtain quotes as per state law.

 

On motion of Mr. Johnson, seconded by Mrs. Abshire, the Board received a report on GEE results for the class of 2002.

 

On motion of Mr. Johnson, seconded by Mrs. Abshire, the Board approved out-of-state travel:

 

(1) 4 teachers and Peggy Benoit to attend a technology conference in San Antonio (summer), paid in full with Title I funds.

(2) 1 counselor/504 school coordinator (one person) to attend ADD conference in San Antonio, April 12, 2002, paid in full with Special Education funds.

 

On motion of Mrs. Abshire, seconded by Mr. Trahan, the Board approved change order No. 7, additions and renovations to Hackberry High School, School District 15 bonds, in the amount of $4,258.21 (hook-up instant water heater in high school area, fire alarm changes in meat processing plant).

 

On motion of Mrs. Abshire, seconded by Mr. Johnson, the Board received an implementation status report (CA1) on Cameron Elementary School.

 

On motion of Mr. Johnson, seconded by Mrs. Abshire, the Board approved the following policy changes:

 

DJED    Bids and Quotations

GBRK   Annual Leave

GCRH   Annual Leave (Maintenance and Custodial Personnel)

 

On motion of Mrs. Abshire, seconded by Mr. Johnson, the Board receive a report from Mr. Gordon Atwell, representing Dan Richey, State Coordinator, Governor’s Program on Abstinence.

 

On motion of Mr. Trahan, seconded by Mr. Johnson, the Board approved application No. 8, reroofing and air conditioning at South Cameron High School, Cameron Elementary School, and South Cameron Elementary School, in the amount of $90,820.00, paid from School District 10 bonds.

 

On motion of Mr. Johnson, seconded by Mrs. Abshire, the Board approved a request from FHA Hackberry High School Chapter, for two regional contest winners to attend the National Leadership Convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota in July (as per School Board policy, $500.00 each).

 

On motion of Mr. Morris, seconded by Mr. Trahan, the Board receiving comments from Stephanie Rogers, CAE Vice-President

 

The Board approved a request from Thomas McCall to adopt a resolution proclaiming March 21, 2002 as Retired Teachers’ Day. 

 

On motion of Mr. Johnson, seconded by Mr. Trahan, the Board approved personnel items:

 

Extended Sick Leave:

 

Suzanne Stearns - Teacher - Grand Lake High School - remainder of the school year

Jana Watson - Teacher - South Cameron Elementary School - remainder of the school year

 

Retirement:

 

Cindy Desonier - Assistant Principal - South Cameron High School - effective June 14, 2002

 

Resignation:

 

Susan Canterbury - 6-hour Sweeper - South Cameron High School

 

Appointment:

 

Mary Kathleen Savoie - Child Specific Aide - Hackberry High School

 

New Hire:

 

Tonia Nolan - Kindergarten Teacher – Hackberry High School

Christine Witherwax - 1st Grade Teacher - Johnson Bayou High School

 

Change:

 

Gail Shay and Dora Dyson, South Cameron Elementary Food Service Technicians, from 5 hours/day to 7 hours/day

 

Advertisement:

Assistant Principal - South Cameron High School

 

On motion of Mr. Morris, seconded by Mrs. Abshire, the Board approved advertising for a child specific aide for Grand Lake High School.

 

On motion of Mr. Johnson, seconded by Mrs. Abshire, the Board denied a request from Petroleum Capitol, LC relative to a mineral lease on Section 16-14-13.

 

On motion of Mr. Johnson, seconded by Mr. Trahan, the Board authorized advertising for a temporary building for special education at Grand Lake High School to be paid by IDEA, Part B funds.

 

On motion of Mrs. Abshire, seconded by Mr. Johnson, the Board moved to executive session to consider an appeal of expulsion.

 

On motion of Mr. Johnson, seconded by Mrs. Abshire, the Board returned to regular session.

 

On motion of Mr. Johnson, seconded by Mr. Trahan, the Board upheld the expulsion.

 

On motion of Mr. Johnson, seconded by Mr. Trahan, the Board approved financial reports for January and February, 2002.

 

On motion of Mr. Trahan, seconded by Mr. Johnson, the Board approved payment of bills.

 

On motion of Mr. Trahan, seconded by Mr. Johnson, the Board adjourned until the next regular session on April 15, 2002.

The Committee of the Whole met on this date at 3:00 p.m. with the following members present: Glenda Abshire, Clifton Morris, Marvin Trahan, Clarence Vidrine and Tony Johnson.  Absent: Pat Howerton.  Mrs. Abshire, Vice-President, presided.

 

On motion of Mr. Johnson, seconded by Mr. Morris, the Committee approved the agenda.

 

On motion of Mr. Johnson, seconded by Mr. Morris, the Committee approved the minutes from the February 4, 2002 meeting.

 

On motion of Mr. Morris, seconded by Mr. Johnson, the Committee received a report on summer maintenance.

 

On motion of Mr. Trahan, seconded by Mr. Johnson, the Committee received financial reports.

 

On motion of Mr. Johnson, seconded by Mr. Trahan, bills were reviewed for payment.

R  E  S  O  L  U  T  I  O  N

 

WHEREAS, the Cameron Parish School Board has received an application to advertise for bid for a lease for oil, gas, and other minerals from Basin Properties, Inc. covering the following described tract of land:

 

Section 16, Township 15 South, Range 15 West, Cameron Parish, Louisiana, containing 640.0 acres, more or less.

 

WHEREAS, said application was accompanied by a certified check in the amount of $500.00 payable to the Cameron Parish School Board, as required by law, and

 

WHEREAS, the Cameron Parish School Board is desirous of advertising for bid the above described tract of land as requested.

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Cameron Parish School Board does hereby authorize and request its Superintendent, Judith Jones, to advertise, pursuant to the terms of R.S. 30, Sections 151 through 158 as amended, for an oil, gas, and mineral lease, covering and affecting the following described tract of land:

 

Section 16, Township 15 South, Range 15 West, Cameron Parish, Louisiana, containing 640.0 acres, more or less.

 

Said advertisement shall further provide that said bids shall be received on or before the fifteenth (15th) day of April, 2002 at 4:00 p.m. at the office of the Cameron Parish School Board, and that the Cameron Parish School Board reserves the right to reject any and all bids.

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that Judith Jones, Superintendent of the Cameron Parish School Board, is empowered to do each and every thing that is necessary to carry out the intents and purposes of this resolution and that such actions are hereby approved and ratified as actions of this Board.
