STAFF INSURANCE COVERAGES

HEALTH INSURANCE

The Cameron Parish School Board shall contract with a health care provider for health, hospitalization, and life insurance benefits for its eligible employees, retirees, and/or their spouses and children. The Board may pay any portion of an employee’s premium it so designates. Employees and retirees shall be responsible for any portion of the employee’s health care premium not paid by the Board.

Any employee or retiree, together with dependents, is eligible to participate in the hospitalization and health care coverage selected by the Board. Any employee who terminates his/her employment with the Board shall not be covered by the Board’s health care plan as of the date of termination. However, any employee who terminates employment with the Board may apply for continued health care coverage in accordance with regulations of the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA).

All employees and retirees shall be responsible for making timely changes in their coverage for hospitalization and/or life insurance, and for notifying the School Board’s payroll/insurance department in writing of any changes.

The School Board may contribute a portion of an employee’s premium of any health care coverage selected by the Board in the following manner:

Active Employees:

The Cameron Parish School Board shall pay a portion of an employee’s health care coverage as determined by the Board of the active employee’s portion of the premium. Adjustments are to be made with the increase in premiums on a year-to-year basis.

Retired employees:

The Cameron Parish School Board shall pay a portion of a retiree’s health care coverage as determined by the Board of the retired employee’s portion of the premium. Adjustments are to be made with the increase in premiums on a year-to-year basis.

To be eligible for the above retired employee benefits, an employee must have been employed by the Board at the time of retirement for a minimum period of employment as determined by the Board and must meet all other stipulations and be a retiree of the Cameron Parish School Board.

If a retiree’s coverage is cancelled, coverage cannot be restored.

Employee Insurance Premiums

Employees not included on the monthly payroll (on leave, workers’ compensation, etc.) shall be held responsible for making arrangements with the payroll/insurance department to either pay their premium when due (at the end of each month) or to cancel in writing before their leave becomes effective. Failure to do so in the specified time shall result in cancellation effective on the date of the last premium payment.

Should an employee cancel his/her coverage while off the payroll, the employee shall be required to reapply when he/she returns to active status.

Any School Board employee who is granted leave without pay by the School Board shall be obligated to pay 100% of the premium after ninety (90) days of leave without pay in any fiscal year. The School Board shall not continue contributions towards the premium. Employees using sick leave for maternity leave purposes, sabbatical leave, or persons on sick leave that receive pay through accumulated sick leave shall not be affected by this provision and the Board shall continue to pay the necessary premiums.

Delinquent Payments of Insurance Premiums

Retired employees and employees not included on the monthly payroll whose payments are thirty (30) days delinquent shall be notified of this fact by certified letter, Federal Express or express mail, return receipt requested. This letter shall inform the employee that if payment is not received within fifteen (15) days of signed confirmation of receipt of delinquent notice, the school system shall:

  1. Cease to collect and pay insurance premiums on their behalf; and

  2. Shall notify the insurance companies of cancellation.

If group hospitalization and supplemental life is involved, it shall result in cancellation of coverage for those employees.

SUPPLEMENTAL HEALTH OR LIFE INSURANCE

All voluntary employee supplemental health and life insurance which the School Board may offer or make available shall be administered through a third party. Voluntary employee supplemental health and life insurance may include, but is not limited to, cancer, heart, dental, vision, disability, life, and long-term care insurance.

UNEMPLOYMENT COMPENSATION

The School Board shall use the reimbursing employer method of participating in financing the Board’s share of unemployment compensation as permitted by state law.

AUTOMOBILE LIABILITY INSURANCE

The School Board shall require personnel within the school district, who use their own vehicles while on official school business during the course of their employment, to carry automobile liability insurance. The amount of coverage shall be at least that required by state law or a minimum which may be set by the Board.
